Datura is a baneful, night blooming flower. Deeply magical and mysterious, it has a love of blooming on full moon nights and has the most intoxicating perfume. Beloved by Sphinx moths, they are the lead pollinator on Datura with their extending proboscis(+10cm!) able to reach deep into the nectar canals of Datura blooms
I love moths. I set up a moth light throughout the summer to see what species are around. Night nature is fascinating and there are so many different things happening that you would never see otherwise. This weird obsession has brought me down the rabbit hole after so many other things but one of them was growing a moth garden. Several species of nightblooming flowers, favoured by certain species of moths. I planted 4oclocks, moonflower, brugmansia, primrose and datura. The nectar of Datura has a buzzy, drug like affect on Sphinx moths that keeps them coming back for more and so does the scent of Datura for me; it draws you in
